Local Soldier Killed in Afghanistan

Families mourn a Wiregrass soldier killed in Afghanistan.

Wiregrass Soldier killed

An Alabama soldier is among those killed Saturday when a humvee exploded in southern Afghanistan.

25-year-old Private First Class, Andrew Hand, was on the ground in Afghanistan not because he had to be there, but because he wanted to be there.

He was offered a desk job but stayed in the field-- searching for improvised explosive devices.

Hand was leading his unit on a mission when an IED caught them off guard exploding killing Hand and three other soldiers.

Hand grew up in Brookwood and Enterprise and was most recently living in the Dothan area with his wife and two children.

Killed were:

Staff Sgt. Conrad A. Mora, 24, of San Diego, Calif.

Sgt. Daniel Lim, 23, of Cypress, Calif.

Spc. Joseph A. Bauer, 27, of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Pfc. Andrew L. Hand, 25, of Enterprise, Ala.

They were assigned to 5th Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, 17th Fires Brigade, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

My son was on the same mission with Andrew. I was finally able to talk with him early the morning of the 25th. He said, " Dad I'm alright but I lost the only friend I have in this Army." My son has told me and his mother about "Hand" It is a shock to my family because through my son we knew Andrew. My God bless his family and give them peace in the future.

My thoughts, prayers, and blessing go out to Andrews Family. I had the honor of serving with Andrew on his first tour in Iraq in 2005. Andrew was a great person soldier and i know he was a great dad. Andrew had the personality that would make anyone who knew him laugh. He was funny and caring and was always willing to help someone out. I will miss you dearly my brother and i know i will see you again someday. RIP I love you.
