TUSCUMBIA, Ala. (AP) - A registered sex offender who had escaped
from the Franklin County Jail has been recaptured.
Franklin County Sheriff Larry Plott tells the TimesDaily newspaper that deputies arrested Jerry O'Dell Kelley in a park in Tuscumbia just before 4 p.m. Friday after a brief foot chase.
The 34-year-old Kelley escaped from jail Thursday night. Plott said a door in the jail either jammed or malfunctioned, which allowed Kelley to escape.
Kelley was jailed on charges of attempted first-degree rape, enticing a child for immoral purposes, first-degree sodomy, failure to register as a sex offender and first-degree sexual abuse. Court officials told the newspaper Kelley was scheduled to go to trial in August on those charges.
Plott said Kelley is now also charged with first-degree escape.
