NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A giant Taiwanese oil skimmer has collected
6.3 million gallons of oily water from the Gulf of Mexico as tests
continue to prove its worth in the cleanup effort.
Bob Grantham, a spokesman for TMT Offshore Group, which owns the
"A Whale" vessel, said Tuesday the oil-water mixture had been
collected during the past three days.
He says the closer the vessel can get to heavy oil, the more
effective it will be.
The skimmer is capable of sucking up 21 million gallons of oily water per day.
The A Whale has been performing tests in the Gulf since last
The U.S. Coast Guard has given the skimmer until Thursday to
prove its value.
