Northport Expected to Cut Workers

NORTHPORT, Ala. (AP) - City workers in Northport could be getting pink slips as early as Tuesday.

ABC 33/40 reports that layoffs are expected as Northport officials try to make up a $2 million budget shortfall.

A recent audit of the city's 2009 budget showed the city actually spent more than it took into water/sewer and general fund budgets.

Several city workers tell the TV station they've heard there are 20 names on the layoff list.

City Council president William Tunnell could not confirm exactly how many layoffs there will be. But he confirms officials are expected to begin the process Tuesday.

Tunnell says not all the layoffs will come from any one department.
