Boy hit on Dauphin Island Parkway identified

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Authorities have identified the 9-year-old boy hit while trying to run across Dauphin Island Parkway.

Mobile police say DeAndre Matthews was on his way to the Family Dollar store Friday evening when he was hit by a Chevrolet Suburban.

The boy was transported to the hospital with non-life theatening injuries but began having trouble breathing during the ambulance ride.

Authorities say he died shortly after arriving at USA Children's and Women's hospital.

Mobile County medical examiner's office has not determined the boy's cause of death.

The 59-year-old driver has not been identified.

Police say alcohol, drugs and speed were not factors in the accident.

What kind of parent lets a 9 year old child cross a busy highway to go to the store alone. Probably sent to the store by a parent. This is so sad that such a young life had to be lost due to neglegence.
