Three children are in the hospital after the golf cart they were riding in was hit by a car.
The accident happened just before 10 a.m. Wednesday morning at the intersection of Choctaw Street and Rosemont Drive.
Police say the three young children were riding in the golf cart in the street.
They were traveling down Rosemont and tried to cross Choctaw.
That's when a Ford Mustang and the cart collided.
Officials say the children were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, although we do not know the extent of those injuries at this time.
The driver of the Mustang was not hurt.
Police say the driver of the car was going the speed limit and was paying attention when the accident happened.
They believe this accident could have been a lot worse.
“This is just a clear cut example of why golf carts shouldn't be used on the highway, we get numerous complaints, we respond to those complaints and this is almost a worst case scenario,” said Capt. Steve Parrish with the Dothan Police Department.
Dothan police say the investigation into the accident is ongoing.
They want to remind people: riding a golf cart on city streets is illegal.
Police say all the children injured in the accident appear to be under the age of 13.
