Ala. truck driver killed in crash on NY highway

WHEATLAND, N.Y. (AP) - State police say a 49-year-old truck driver from Decatur, Ala., has died after his rig veered off the New York State Thruway outside Rochester, ran into some trees and caught fire.

Capt. Michael Nigrelli says witnesses reported seeing the truck swerving in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 90 around 6 a.m. Tuesday before it left the highway's right side and hit trees in the town of Wheatland, 10 miles southwest of Rochester.

Nigrelli says the rig then caught fire. Troopers arrived soon after but were prevented from rescuing the driver because of the flames.

The driver's name was being withheld until relatives are notified.

Police say the truck was hauling building supplies from Ohio to a Rochester suburb.

I-90's eastbound right lane remains closed but is expected to reopen early Tuesday afternoon.
