Governor Riley Appoints Benjamin Lewis as District Judge

MONTGOMERY – Governor Bob Riley on Monday appointed Representative Benjamin Lewis to serve as Houston County District Judge. The appointment takes effect immediately.

The position became vacant with the recent retirement of Judge John Steensland.

“Ben is the most qualified candidate for this important position and I am proud to appoint him,” said Governor Riley. “He has the background and experience necessary to be an outstanding judge.”

Lewis is an attorney who has experience handling both civil and criminal cases. He is an assistant state attorney in the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit in Marianna, Florida. Prior to this position, Lewis was a private practice attorney.

In 2006, Lewis was elected to the State Legislature representing House District 86.

“It has been an honor to serve the people of Houston County as their state representative and now it will be an honor to serve them from the bench,” said Lewis. “I will be an effective and fair judge.”

The appointment creates a vacancy for the House District 86 seat, which will be filled in November when the general election takes place.

This is really shocking to the conscious of many people, especially to people with knowledge of the local judicial system. This appointment does look political. To say Mr. Lewis is the best qualified applicant for this appointment is really a stretch. Being a District Judge requires judicial excellence and patience, along with wisdom and knowledge of the law. The exercise of judicial discretion dictates people be treated with respect and dignity, while at the same time, fairness and disciplined decisions must be present. I personally know the other applicants. I do not know Mr. Lewis. He may be qualified. I do not believe he has anywhere near the experience in the local courts or experience of the practice of the law, as do the other candidates. I was born in Dothan, and have basically lived my life here. I am an older attorney, and have years of experience. My hat was not in the ring. As a life long Houston County resident, I must ask:" Was this really political?" Seems that way!!

If 4 years as an Attorney, 2 of which have been spent as a State representative, make Mr. Lewis the "most Qualified" in Gov. Riley's opinion, may God have mercy on us all.

How can a man accept the position of Judge when he knows he was told to block the bingo vote and did this is his payoff for douing so. But yet ha will sit on the bench and be called Your Honor when he doesnt have any honor he was told to block the vote and he would be rewarded with this judgeship. Every boduy that has any knowledce of what goes on knows this is why he was appointed to the job by Riley. The two JOHNS that backed him in his election for representative controls him and every body knows this is truth. Jusdt another screw up in Houston co, and another officials for them to control. We have a very backward and corrupy Co. run by a few people wh wants every thing their way. They know who they are and so do the people of Houston Co. But any body that is obligated to Bob Riley is nothing but crooked who ever they are bar none.
