Longtime Opelika council member dies in accident

OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) - Police say longtime Opelika physician and city council member Dr. William D. Lazenby has been killed in a riding mower accident.

Police say the 79-year-old Lazenby was cutting his grass just before dark on Monday when he apparently attempted to go up an incline and his mower flipped over backwards, pinning him underneath.

Police say his wife called them when she could not locate him, and officers found the body under the mower.

Lee County Coroner Bill Harris pronounced Lazenby dead at the scene. He says the death is being investigated as an accident.
