Alabama National Cemetery marks 1st Memorial Day

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama National Cemetery will hve its first Memorial Day observance since burials began at the site nearly a year ago.

Monday's program will begin at 9 a.m. at the 479-acre site.

Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Veteran Affairs W. Clyde
Marsh will be the guest speaker.

Children's groups are set to plant flags at the graves of the more than 400 veterans or dependants buried at the cemetery.

The American Village, which neighbors the cemetery, will hold its Blue Star Salute on Monday.

Retired Army Lt. Gen. Harold G. Moore will deliver the keynote address at the event's opening ceremonies.
