May is national bike month.
There were many cyclists in Westgate Park today, as Mayor Mike Schmitz kicked off the inaugural ride for fitness.
Bicyclists of all ages came out to ride the new 3-mile bike trail.
They also learned the latest dance moves from Zumba.
The event is designed to decrease the risks of heart disease and diabetes through exercise.
And after several delays, the park is finally open to the public.
“It's a safe place for kids to come out and their families to ride bikes, exercise and spend time together. You can feel the energy, and look at all the kids, it's great," said Mayor Schmitz.
Alabama currently ranks 46th in the nation for overweight and obese children.
