Birmingham employees face 10 percent pay cut

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Birmingham mayor William Bell is asking city employees to give up 10 percent of their pay.

He asked for the cut Monday as a way to counter the city's budget deficit.

Bell employees at a mandatory meeting that he could see no other way to balance the budget for fiscal year 2011, which starts on July 1.

Bell plans to present the budget proposals to city council members Tuesday.

He says he also plans to cut his pay and will ask city councilors to take a cut as well.
