BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Officials are investigating a fire at a Birmingham home that left a 30-year-old paraplegic man dead.
Birmingham Battalion Chief C.W. Mardis said the man's 59-year-old mother was able to pull him about halfway down a hallway before the fire became too much and she was overcome by smoke. She was taken to UAB Hospital for treatment for second-degree burns and smoke inhalation.
Investigators believe the fire started accidentally in the man's bedroom in the one-story, wooden home on early Friday morning.
Mardis said the fire is under investigation. The man's death is the fourth fire fatality in Birmingham this year.
