Beginning Monday, Alabama residents who purchase an energy efficient appliance can receive a cash rebate from the federal government.

So far, the program is proving to be pretty popular.

The federal government is trying to stimulate the economy and help people "go green."

And here in Alabama, some residents say helping the environment and getting a few extra bucks in your pocket is a win-win situation.

If you're in the market for a new appliance...“Now's the time to upgrade your appliances,” says Beverly Burton, Store Manager at Sears in Dothan.

That's because the federal government is offering cash to get energy efficient appliances in your home.

“The big push by the federal government is to get more money in circulation so that hopefully it will affect the economy and we need a boost right now,”

Bill Spivey jumped at the offer.

“Today we got a side by side refrigerator and a built in dishwasher,”

He says the rebate offer convinced him to buy.

“That was the thing that really jammed it home,”

Purchasing an energy efficient appliance may cost you a lot of money now, but they're designed to save you money in the long run.

“They literally can pay for themselves in two years,” said Burton.

“We are looking forward to saving some energy here and being a little quieter in the house, too,” added Spivey.

The stimulus package provided Alabama with four million dollars in appliance rebates.

“I think it's a great thing for our customer and a great thing for our country,” said Burton.

The program has been in place less than a day and already, more than a million dollars is gone.

“I went on the internet real early this morning and almost a million bucks was gone by the time I could get on, so it's seems to be very, very popular,” said Spivey.
