Mayor's Ride for Fitness

Mayor Mike Schmitz and the City of Dothan are pleased to present the inaugural Mayor’s Ride for Fitness, celebrating National Bike Month and the grand opening of the Westgate Bike & Fitness Trails.

The event will take place on May 22, 2010 with a start time of 9:00 a.m.

During the event, participants will be able to join Mayor Mike to be among the first to ride the new 3.3 mile asphalt bike loop at Westgate Park.

There will also be an outdoor Fitness Fair, free preride refreshments, a
mass warmup for bike riders, a bicycle obstacle course, Zumba demonstrations, and music played by an onsite DJ! Participants will receive an event souvenir gift and a Fitness Recognition Certificate from the Mayor.

A Bicycle Give-A-Way, sponsored by Dothan Cycle and Fitness, will also be a fun part of the festivities.

The Mayor’s Ride for Fitness addresses one of Mayor Mike’s goals for the City of Dothan – to improve citizenry quality of life through the promotion of health and fitness.

According to the Data Resource Center for Child and Adolescent Health, Alabama ranks 46th in the nation for overweight and obese children (1st is the best rating).

Being obese increases a child’s risk for some serious childhood medical problems. These include:
• Pre-diabetes and diabetes
• Heart disease, high blood pressure (hypertension)
• Hyperlipidemia (too much fat in the blood, which can clog the arteries), high cholesterol
• Sleep apnea and breathing problems (see Sleep Problems on YourChild)
• Bone conditions, such as hip problems
• Gastro-intestinal diseases
• Early puberty
• Psychological problems, like poor self-esteem and depression

Physical activity is key to preventing and reversing the childhood obesity epidemic.

It is also beneficial for adults as well. Some of the benefits include added energy, improved overall health, and the reduced risk of serious illness and disease.

Bicycle safety will also be promoted at the event. The Dothan Police department and their youth Police Explorers group will provide educational information on bicycle safety.

Helmets will be required, and a limited number of helmets will be available for free to the public.

The Mayor’s Ride for Fitness is sponsored by the City of Dothan, Southeast Alabama Medical Center, WTVY News 4, and Dothan Cycle and Fitness. Upon arrival at the event, all participants should enter at Gilbert Field
at Westgate Park. For more information, please call Dothan’s Leisure Services Department at 615-3700.
