MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama New South Coalition has voted overwhelmingly to endorse state Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks for governor after his Democratic primary opponent, U.S. Rep. Artur Davis, decided not to go through the group's screening process.
President Emeritus Hank Sanders said Davis' decision not to attend the meeting of the predominantly black group Saturday in Montgomery helped cinch the endorsement for Sparks.
The group also endorsed Lt. Gov. Jim Folsom Jr. for re-election, Mobile attorney Michel Nicrosi for attorney general, and Birmingham attorney Jeremy Sherer for state treasurer.
