Gov's Office Reacts to Report That Vote on Gambling Bill Being Delayed

MONTGOMERY – Jeff Emerson, Communications Director for Governor Bob Riley, made this statement on Wednesday in response to published reports the House is delaying a vote on the gambling bill:

“The Legislature has wasted nearly the entire session obsessing over this gambling bill that doesn’t give the people a true up-or-down vote on gambling. Now we learn they’re going to spend even more time on it. Delaying this vote until next week does nothing but give casino lobbyists extra time to influence lawmakers. We’ve all seen reports of legislators saying they were offered contributions in exchange for their votes on this bill, so giving lobbyists more time to pressure lawmakers should be troubling to every Alabamian, regardless of whether they support gambling or not,” said Emerson.

Jay ... I don't believe that you believe all this BS that you just posted... Most of it doesn't have a thing to do with Bingo or whether or not that the majority of us have the intelligence to read the same information you do and make our own decision on what to believe.... Whether Gov Riley or the members of the Legislature is corrupt will come out soon enough .... And if i were Ron Gilley i would not open my business for Riley, Tyson and the task force to perform Illegal raids and tear my equipment out ... I think he is smart to let the courts decide what the next step should be ...

The most of the comments on this page seems to be from people who are ill-informed or cannot understand what they read. Bob Riley has brought MORE legal jobs into the State of Alabama than any Governor in history. Thousands of jobs in the auto industry; several thousand with the new steel mill in Mobile; and many, many others. Just because he is trying to do the job he swore to do (enforce the law of Alabama and the Constitition) you people come down on him. One automobile industry employs nearly as many people as all the gambling industry does combined. The gambling just makes billionaires out of a few BINGO BOSSES. And ask Mr. Gilley to produce payroll records showing that he ever employed 1,200 to 1,300 emoloyees at any one time. He cannot because this is only another lie put forth be the Gaming Industry. And if is LEGAL in Houston County, open up CC. What are they afraid of???

I am not from Alabama (Florida) but I think the people of alabama should be allowed to vote yes or no. I also think alabama would be a much better state when Riley is no longer the governor. He is power hungry and probably paid off by the indians. He is spending as much tax money as he can before he leaves office on his so called task force. Alabama you have an idiot running your state...Just my opinion

I find it hard to believe that the Governor's office would have the gall to say anything about legislators receiving money for their support of Bingo. I believe it is wrong to accept payment for votes, but the Governor has been accused of the very same thing. Anyone who takes the time to research his past connections would have to admit that, at least, his involvment with gaming interests outside of our state is questionable. One important factor that many people omit is the silence of the tribes named in many of the reports, that have allegedly given money to the Governor. If I were accused of something i did not do, I would at least stand up and deny my involvment. They sure have been quiet about the whole thing.....?

What an idiotic issue to be debating in such a critical time in our economy. Bingo halls, casino whatever name you give it = jobs = citizens (Alabamians and the like)= taxpayers = revenue for the state = reduced crime = teamwork/peace/unity/productive state and citizens. The many articles about how much the raid cost is plain ludicrous, simply put BAD POLITICS! The countless families that have suffered not only financial loss, but possibly cars and homes because the job they were HIRED for was eliminated not by the employer, but the state. The state of Alabama rapes its citizens of decent jobs (how's that for a headline?) Seriously, Riley, I bet your Easter was happy, full of food and festivities, why don't you come off your pedestal and check out how the former casino/bingo hall employees celebrated the holiday, let alone any other day of the week while you sit in your glass house. Beware of KARMA...its a beeeooootch...
