Ala. woman gets life sentence for killing husband

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - A 49-year-old woman has been sentenced by a judge in Mobile to life in prison for the shooting death of her husband.

Melanie Gwen Jones was sentenced on Thursday for killing her husband, Bobby Jones, outside his auto repair shop in Citronelle. She was convicted of murder by a jury in February.

Prosecutors said she shot her husband while he was sitting outside his business in 2007 because he wanted a divorce.

Melanie Jones told Mobile County Circuit Judge John Lockett during her sentencing hearing that she did not commit the crime and could not have harmed her husband.

Bobby Jones' brother, Donald Jones, asked Lockett to impose a sentence of life in prison.
