The popular cash for clunkers program is back!
But this time, the rebates aren't for your vehicle; they're for your old appliances.
Uncle Sam is helping cut the cost for those in the market for a new energy efficient appliance.
“The economy is down right now and we're kind of in a recession so they're trying to stimulate the economy and on top of that they're encouraging us to go green,” said Eleasa Smith, a sales associate at Sears in Dothan.
Beginning April 19th, Alabama residents can receive rebates if they purchase appliances with this energy star label.
“I think it's going to be good for Alabama and I think it's going to be good for the customer,” added Patsy Jacobs, another Sears sales associate.
The following appliances qualify for a rebate:
$25 for room air conditioners
$50 for freezers
$75 for your dishwasher
$100 for washers
$150 for standard-size refrigerators.
“And it's a mail in rebate and it's actually going to be a prepaid visa card,” said Smith.
“What they're trying to do is get more energy efficient appliances out there so the consumers are using less energy,” said Tim Mitchell, appliance specialist at The Home Depot in Dothan.
The state of Alabama received $4.1 million from the federal government for this appliance program. Now associates at Home Depot and at Sears say not only will this program help the environment, it's going to help you save money in the long run.
“The washers are using up to sometimes up to 50 and 60 percent less water than the old style washers. When you realize that kind of saving over a long period of time, these pay for themselves in a little less than two years,” added Mitchell.
But this money-saving program won't last forever
“Once the money is gone, it's over!” said Smith.
Again, Alabama’s rebate appliance program begins April 19th.
