Summary of action in Alabama Legislature

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A summary of action in the Alabama Legislature on Tuesday, the 25th meeting day of the regular session:


-Gave final approval to a $1.6 billion General Fund budget. Goes to Senate.

-Passed a bill that will levy a supplemental privilege tax of
$1,063 per bed on nursing homes from Sept. 1, 2010 to Aug. 31, 2011
to help fund the Medicaid program. Goes to Senate.


-Gave final passage to a bill to provide a tax breaks for businesses who hire the unemployed. Goes to governor.

-Approved a bill to speed up income tax refunds from the state Revenue Department. Goes to House.

-Passed a resolution encouraging the attorney general to investigate unscrupulous roofing practices. Goes to House.

-Approved a bill to ban smoking in restaurants. Goes to House.


-Senate Judiciary Committee meets at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in room 727 of the Statehouse to consider drunken driving legislation.

-House Constitution and Elections Committee meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday in room 603 at the Alabama Statehouse to bills calling for nonpartisan elections of judges.

-House Government Appropriations Committee meets at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in room 617 to consider Senate-passed bill to pump $1 billion into road and bridge construction over 10 years.

-House and Senate meet at 10 a.m. Thursday.
