Officials with the Alabama Republican Party have scheduled a hearing on a challenge to state Senator Harri Anne Smith's qualifications to run for re-election on the GOP ticket.

The controversy stems from Smith's endorsement of democrat Bobby Bright for congress in 2008.

Smith lost the republican nomination for the second district congressional seat to state representative Jay Love of Montgomery.

Senator Smith is scheduled to appear before the Republican Party steering committee Saturday in Montgomery.

Two voters who are challenging her republican qualifications are also expected to testify.

“Hopefully I’ll be able to run as a republican, I want to run as a republican but anytime anteing gets in the way of me representing the people, I’m always going to choose the people,” said Smith.

If Smith is removed from the Republican Party, she can campaign for state senate as a member of the Independent Party.

Joey must also believe that is is O.K. to give your word and then break it. A Republican Office Holder takes an oath not to publiclly support or campaign for a candidate outside of the party when there is a Republican candidate in the same race. It does not say that said office holder cannnot VOTE for the other, Mrs. Smith knew of this rule. It is about being honest and about being truthful

They must be afraid that Senator Smith will win and are resorting to underhanded tricks.

Who are the two voters who challenged her? Jay Love and his wife?

I think Smith is a great Senator, and my wife and I will vote for her regardless of her political party. In this coming election we are going to vote for the person, not their their political party!!!!!!!

We need more independent and other party candidates anyhow. The Republicans and Democrats have corrupted our government in Washington and apparently at the states level too. While the things they do in congress may not be illegal many of those things are certainly immoral. Any politician who wants to earn the trust of the public would do well to distance themselves from either of the two major parties.
