MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Senate is locked in a filibuster over legislation designed to the fight the federal health care plan.
Democratic Sen. Roger Smitherman of Birmingham is leading the opposition to a bill sponsored by Republican Sen. Scott Beason of
Gardendale. It would ensure that no person, employer or health care
provider could be compelled to participate in any health care system.
Beason says his bill would help with the lawsuit that Alabama's
attorney general and other state attorneys general have filed over
the federal plan.
Smitherman says the federal plan will help many Alabamians and
the Legislature shouldn't oppose it.
