On-duty cops can't attend Mobile council session

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Mobile Police Chief Micheal T. Williams has
told officers they can't take time off to attend Tuesday's City
Council meeting.

The Press-Register reports that officers got the word in emails
from the chief.

The ban means on-duty personnel can't participate in a planned protest of potential pay cuts.

Off-duty police personnel are prohibited from driving city-issued vehicles to the meeting.

The city is facing a budget deficit projected to hit $18.5
million by Sept. 30.

Mayor Sam Jones says pay cuts will be needed to balance the city's budget.
