MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama's parole board is considering whether to free a man convicted in a brutal kidnapping and attempted sexual assault in Shelby County in 1992.
The Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles is scheduled to consider Tuesday whether to approve the early release of 44-year-old Gary Owens Matthews.
Matthews was convicted of kidnapping and attempted rape in an attack on a student teacher who was working at Helena Elementary School in 1992.
The victim fought Matthews, and evidence showed he assaulted her sexually with a stick.
Matthews was sentenced to 50 years in prison, and records show he is currently scheduled for release in 2043.
Attorney General Troy King's office says he will appear before the parole board to oppose Matthews' early release.
