Fort Payne Guard unit returns after year in Iraq

FORT PAYNE, Ala. (AP) - It was a good weekend for members of the
Alabama National Guard's 1343rd Chemical Co.

The soldiers returned home Saturday after being deployed to Iraq
for almost a year.

It was particularly sweet for Capt. Jesse Howard IV.

His infant son, Caleb, could barely hold his head up when Howard left last year.

Now, Caleb is walking and attempting to talk.

Howard was among 127 members of the Fort Payne based unit that
returned home.

Howard told the Huntsville Times that seeing his son made him
realize how much time had passed while the unit was deployed.

People lined the streets waving flags as unit members returned
to Fort Payne Saturday.
