Bus Drivers at U of A Go on Strike

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Campus bus drivers at the University of
Alabama have gone on strike.

Drivers with the Crimson Ride transit system picketed Monday at
the Tuscaloosa office of First Transit, the Ohio-based company that
operates the campus bus service.

The strike is over pay. Drivers at Alabama are paid $9.50 an
hour, and they say that's less than First Transit drivers are paid
in comparable cities.

First Transit spokeswoman Maureen Richmond says the company had
to operate a limited schedule Monday on campus. The union
representing the company's 60 drivers at Alabama authorized a

Richmond said the union has agreed to return drivers to work on
Tuesday, and negotiations will continue.
