If you're in the market for a summer job, listen up!
The City of Dothan needs to fill dozens of positions during the summer months, and they need your help.
The Dothan Department of Leisure Services is holding registration for Red Cross Lifeguard Training classes.
They have some lifeguards returning to work from last summer but still need a lot more to sign up.
The city has dozens of job openings this summer.
“We have approximately 45 lifeguard positions open for the City of Dothan,” said Dothan Aquatics Manager, Robin Patrick.
That's why leisure services is holding several lifeguard training sessions at Westgate indoor pool this week.
The class costs a total of $56, but that fee can be waived.
“If someone is interested in taking lifeguard training and working for the city, they can sign a contract with us and they don’t have to pay to take the class,” said Patrick.
“It's a fantastic opportunity,” she added.
Patrick says lifeguarding it's a great way for high school and college students to spend their summer, especially when jobs are hard to come by.
“It's demanding and it is a responsibility but it is a very fun job and a lot of kids enjoy it.
Leisure Services is one of the biggest employers of seasonal people, summer jobs, and I think it's massive at this time when jobs are so scarce,” she said.
There are several requirements before becoming a lifeguard:
“They need to be able to swim pretty well in order to take the class. They learn all kinds of first aid, they are certified in first aid and C.P.R. and A.E.D. when they finish the class, that's part of the class,”
And don't forget about the perks...
“They get to be outside, they get to be in the sun, they get to be social,”
City pools are scheduled to open May 28th.
You need to be at least 15 years old to take the lifeguard training class and 16 years old to be hired by the City of Dothan, but there is no age limit for those wanting to become a lifeguard.
Officials say it's one of their highest paid seasonal positions. Lifeguards make $8.50 an hour.
Training sessions will begin February 22 and go until March 11.
They’ll be held on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Westgate Park’s indoor pool.
