Forkland Mayor Jailed Over Use of Gas Taxes

FORKLAND, Ala. (AP) - Forkland Mayor Eddie J. Woods has been
jailed for allegedly failing to comply with a Greene County Circuit
Court's orders about the use of gas taxes.

The Tuscaloosa News reports Friday that Woods was taken into
custody Thursday by Greene County Sheriff's deputies.

Greene County Commissioner William Johnson said he expected the
38-year-old to stay jailed until a review of documents by Judge
Eddie Hardaway.

Hardaway ruled on Nov. 6 that the mayor and Forkland had broken
state law by misappropriating earmarked funds from taxes levied on
gasoline purchases.

He ordered that officials in the town of about 630 to hand over
public documents to the commission.

The commission had sued, saying the gasoline tax dollars were
being used for operating costs instead of road development and
maintenance as required.
