14-year-old Ala. boy charged in friend's shooting

ATHENS, Ala. (AP) - A 14-year-old north Alabama boy who
accidentally shot his best friend with a rifle is now charged with
second-degree assault.

Limestone County authorities said Tuesday the charge was filed
because an investigation showed the Oak Grove youth's actions were
reckless.

The 13-year-old victim suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen
last week.

He's out of the hospital, but Investigator Stanley McNatt said the bullet remains lodged in his pelvic bond.

The boy who was charged is now free and his parent's custody.

The youth told investigators he believed the safety of his rifle was on when he pulled the trigger, wounding his friend.

Authorities haven't released the name of either boy involved in the shooting.
