Party Over at Club Rio Grande

At Tuesday morning's Dothan City Commission meeting, commissioners unanimously voted to revoke the business license for Club Rio Grande located downtown.

The decision comes after a year filled with run-ins with the law.

“In March there were two people that were shot on the premise, in July there was a 19-year-old found outside the club, he was beaten. August, there was a 26-year-old female found beaten inside the club with a beer bottle and, of course what happened on Christmas night,” said Lt. David Jay with the Dothan Police Department.

And because of all these incidents…

“The police dept. really requests this place be shut down,” said Jay.

City leaders decided; they've had enough.

“All in favor say yay. (7 yays). All opposed to's been revoked, thank you,” said Mayor Mike Schmitz.

Lt. Jay says in 2009, police responded to 125 calls at Club Rio Grande.
He says you must take into account that the club is only open a few days during the week.

“I think they are only open Friday and Saturday night so you're looking at 104 nights and you have that many calls, it’s not like they're open 7 days a week,” said District 3 Commissioner Paul Lee.

“We've had car thefts, we've had cars broken into , we've had drug activity, we've had armed robberies, pretty much you name it's happened there at Club Rio,” said Jay.

Club Rio Grande was the scene of four shootings in 2009.

The most recent; when gunfire erupted Christmas night, sending three people to the hospital.

“We started looking at how many times we respond to this business. Sometimes it’s two, three, five, 10 times a night,” added Jay.

Lt. Jean Turner with the Alabama Bureau of Investigation provided photos of alleged illegal activity taking inside the club.

“In some of these pictures, it's clearly over the fire departmentlimit; it looks like sexual acts going on inside the club in front of everyone,” said Lt. Turner.

So for now, the party is over at Club Rio Grande.

The owner of the club, Monica Warren, was not present at this morning's meeting to defend her business.

Claybird, you are incredibly ignorant to use terms such as honkies, crackers, Nazis, etc. How would you feel if someone were to use racist words against African Americans, Latinos, or whatever? It would anger you and you would call them racist! Nobody wants to push minorities out of Dothan, that is an absurd assumption! Sounds like you need to grow up.

I'm glad they shut the club down. Too many problems and nobody wanted to try a new approach. If you own a business and your customers are being unruly, you as a business owner should put your foot down and get things straight. Monica and her husband are not good business people. It is almost like they feed off of the drug activity and the crime that goes on in their place of business.@ claybird, it's not a black or white thing. It is about good solid business owners doing the right thing and Monica wasn't. They should of closed the place down years ago.

Wow claybird, you are delusional. My comment was obviously racist in no way shape or form. Obviously, the place is trashy if the police had to come down there so often. You sound like you have a chip on your shoulder buddy, and for your information, I'm not a grandma. I'm a 26 year old woman, a pretty darn good looking one at that too! Alot of the clubs around town are trashy, no matter what race goes there. I'm just glad that one of them got closed down. And yes, I do carry a gun, and mace, so suck it! Would it make you feel better if I posted ALL of the clubs around Dothan I think are trashy? I have absolutely NO problem with anyone of any color. Get that chip off your shoulder, and try not to be a racist yourself.

i really have no opinion on this article other than the fact that wtvy shouldn’t allow claybird’s racist comments to be posted. Racism goes both ways, white, black, purple, green, or blue. I personally don’t like the word cracker or Nazi to describe a white person. Anyway, just consider the content of the text that you are typing when commenting on racial issues. Claybird, your comments ooze of hypocrisy.

keep the streets cleaner? have you been downtown lately josephine? not exactly anywhere near clean. stay in cowarts grandma, the city is too big for you. rio wasnt a trashy place, actually it was rather nice on the inside. maybe if a bunch of honkies opened up a bar there the image would improve. nothing like pouring crackers into crow soup. so now the downtown iimage can be complete, a lovely place to stroll after dark. just carry a gun. want to improve the image of a neighborhood? throw all the minorities out. thats dothans idea of progress. give them bingo and draft beer and everyones attitude gets better right? mike schmitz(is he polish or a nazi) should have stuck with selling cars, he sold dothan a lemon.

Good, they need to close that trashy place down. That's one way to keep the streets of Dothan cleaner.

funny they just revoked the license when monica turned her license in last week voluntarily. ten times a night? i doubt that, prove it on paper. the downtown committie should try being a little less racist when dealing with a public establishment. when the club first tried to open as a nightclub the city did everything in their power to deny them any possibility of having a night club, including having the fire chief come up with bogus and numerous violations of fire codes, i should know because i did most of the repairs. then the abc board came in, several times, with their own agenda in regards to allowing liqour sales in the building. and lets not forget the health inspector, who couldnt put all the violations on one write up but would find something new every time they visited, same with the fire inspector, same as the abc nazis. the city council is full of bigoted bumpkins with their own agendas that dont include the rights of minorities. is it safe downtown at night now?
