Ala. man sentenced for fatal boating accident

WETUMPKA, Ala. (AP) - A 22-year-old Montgomery man was sentenced to a year in jail for a fatal 2008 boating accident on Lake Martin.

The Montgomery Advertiser says family members of the two people who died asked Elmore County Circuit Judge Ben Fuller to accept the recommended sentence for Patrick Leigh Cumbie.

Cumbie's speedboat ran into a pontoon boat carrying a large group of people from Prattville on the night of Aug. 9, 2008. Court records show his blood alcohol content was .19, more than twice the legal limit.

The crash killed Donnie Tatum. Sue Tatum was severely injured and died months later.

Cumbie apologized in court on Monday.

He pleaded guilty in October 2009 to charges of homicide by vessel, felony assault and three counts of misdemeanor assault.
