BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Hazardous materials crews were kept busy
by a spill and natural gas leak in the Birmingham area.
Birmingham fire Battalion Chief C.W. Mardis said the spill
occurred Tuesday when a Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railway
tanker ruptured and dumped dry sodium chlorate at the facility.

In a separate incident, authorities responded to a natural gas leak in eastern Birmingham early Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities evacuated Huffman Baptist Church and a nearby recreation center.
A Trussville Utilities spokesman said the leak was prompted when city workers struck a low-pressure natural gas line while working on a drain.
