Alabama Man Hits Mom with Hammer; Claims Self-Defense

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Police arrested a 56-year-old Mobile man
after officers found his 80-year-old mother unresponsive and

Police spokesman Officer Ron Wallace tells the Press-Register
that 56-year-old Clarence Ira Wiggins told police he hit his mother
in the head with a hammer after she hit him in the head with a
plate and came after him with a hatchet.

Police responding to a report of domestic violence arrested
Wiggins about a block from the house where he lives with his
mother. His mother, whom police didn't identify, was taken to the
University of South Alabama Medical Center, where she remained
unresponsive Friday.

Wiggins was booked into the Mobile Metro Jail Thursday afternoon
on a second-degree domestic violence charge.

Wallace says it's unclear what started the dispute or who called
