This New Year has brought freezing conditions for most of the southeastern part of the country.
Forecasters say the wiregrass can expect overnight temperatures in the 20's for at least a week.
Winter weather has arrived in the wiregrass and it's poised to do some damage.
“You want to focus on your exterior pipes, making sure they're wrapped and making sure they're protected,”
Jason Firster is the store manager at Lowe’s located on Ross Clark Circle in Dothan.
He says avoiding the proper precautions against the freezing temps could end up costing you.
“If your pipe ruptures or bursts you better hope it's above ground because that's going to be a lot easier to get to and a lot easier to repair. Faucets as well you need to make sure they are protected from frost,” he added.
In addition to protecting pipes it's also recommended you cover your outside plants.
If you have any furry friends that are outside during this cold snap you should bring them inside as well.
And finally don't forget to check on elderly friends and neighbors to make sure they're protected from the cold.
Space heaters are a popular source of heat this time of year.
But they pose a serious fire hazard.
“The number one mistake that make is leaving it on unattended…the main thing to do is if you're going to use a heater you need to be present,” said Firster.
“Most of these are thermostatically controlled with a high, medium, low switch, you can set it to comfortable level and the heater will cut off when you're finished with it,”
It's all in an effort to keep you and yours safe and warm.
Freeze warnings are issued when there is the possibility of temperatures sustained at or below freezing for at least 2 hours.
Meteorologists expect freezing conditions beginning Saturday night.
