Shelby Co Inmates Leave Cell, Jail Officer Resigns

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A corrections officer at the Shelby County Jail has resigned after a policy violation involving two female inmates.

Sheriff's deputies received a tip that two inmates had been allowed to leave their cells around midnight on Dec. 16.

An administrative investigation determined that the inmates' movement was "irregular," and that they left their cells.

Sheriff's office spokesman Capt. Ken Burchfield said the women did not leave the jail building and declined to give any more specifics about the incident.

He said Sheriff Chris Curry has requested the Alabama Bureau of
Investigation look into the incident to determine if any criminal
activity took place.
