MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Democrats in the Alabama Senate want to
take $1 billion from a state savings account and spend it on road
and bridge construction.

Sen. Lowell Barron and other members of the Senate Democratic
Caucus said Wednesday they will make the proposed constitutional
amendment a priority in the legislative session beginning next
month.

Barron tried to pass the same proposal in the spring legislative
session, but he failed by two votes. Barron said much has changed
since then because Alabama's unemployment has gone up and some
vacant Senate seats have been filled.

He said spending $100 million per year from the Alabama Trust
Fund for 10 years would create jobs and make highways safer.
