SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (AP) - The family of an 11-year-old Alabama boy
who died of pneumonia has started a foundation in his memory to help needy children in Scottsboro and a grade school in Mexico.
The foundation, called "Never Give Up," was begun in memory of Alex Garcia, a Scottsboro student who died on Aug. 3.
The Huntsville Times reports that the foundation is sponsoring 250 children in grades 1-6 at Felipe Carrillo Puerto School in Buena Vista, Mexico, as part of its "Sharing Shoes, Warming Hearts" campaign.
Alex met the children last year while attending the school and noticed that some of them did not own a pair of shoes.
He urged his family to help them.
With funds raised by the foundation, the family hopes to deliver shoes and socks this Christmas.
