BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Birmingham could soon have a new mayor.
Tuesday a new City Council takes office and votes on its new leader.
That means Carole Smitherman's tenure as Birmingham's acting mayor could come to an abrupt halt.
After its swearing in Tuesday, the council's members will elect a president and, in effect, pick the interim mayor, who may or may not be Smitherman.
he narrowly won re-election to her council seat and faces opposition for the council presidency.
One option is keeping Smitherman as president, a job she would return to if she fails to win in her bid to be elected mayor on Dec. 8.
Another is electing another president.
