Police say 31-year-old Taletha Lashe Wooden, who also goes by Taletha Sanders, is charged with willful torture and abuse of a child under 18 years old by a responsible person.
Police said Wooden is accused of beating and choking her son when he started crying when soap got in his eyes while she washed his hair.
The incident reportedly happened May 4. Police detective Keith Johnson said he was contacted by DHR officials and began investigating Sept. 18.
Reports indicate an adult saw the marks on the boy, questioned him and then called DHR officials.
Wooden was released from the Lauderdale County Detention Center on $1,000 bail.
