Alabama Lawyer Receives Award from Gruber Foundation

HOMEWOOD, Ala. (AP) - A Montgomery attorney known for his
defense of death row inmates in Alabama is receiving a major award.

Bryan Stevenson, executive director of the Equal Justice
Initiative, will receive the Gruber Foundation Justice Prize during
an event Thursday at Samford University in suburban Birmingham.

Stevenson will be honored with the European Roma Rights Centre
of Budapest, Hungary, which fights racism and human rights abuses
of Roma peoples in Europe.

Both Stevenson and the Hungarian organization are being
recognized for their advocacy of human rights on behalf of
oppressed groups.

The prize is worth $500,000. It is presented by the Peter and
Patricia Gruber Foundation of New York.
