Ala. town to remove tree despite elderly protest

MUNFORD, Ala. (AP) - Munford Mayor Lynn Swinford says the City Council decided to go stick with plans to chain saw the tree near City Hall because members are worried a limb could break off and hit someone.

Regulars at Munford's senior citizens center staged a protest
earlier this month to save the tree.

They say it's a landmark in the east Alabama city, plus they get exercise picking up pecans under the tree.

The director of the senior center, Judith Moon, says the
demonstrators will respect the city's decision.

But she says it was made partly because council members don't identify with elderly residents.
