Jury awards $3.76 million in hotel pool death

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A jury has awarded $3.76 million to the
family of a 19-year-old who died after an accident in a swimming
pool at a Montgomery hotel.

Derrick Marshall, a receiver at Wetumpka High School who had
signed with Alabama State University, was attending a family
reunion at the Rodeway Inn, formerly known as King's Inn, when the
accident occurred two years ago.

He died several months later.

The Montgomery County Health Department had shut down the pool.

The family alleged that hotel employees told them they could use it

Josh Wright, an attorney for Marshall's family, says the jury
award Tuesday sends a strong message to hotels in Alabama.

Property manager Judith Harper says the hotel is under new
management and has been cleaned up.
