Mother pleads guilty to smothering infant daughter

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - A Prichard woman has pleaded guilty to killing her infant daughter, who she smothered in a plastic bag and left outside to be picked up as trash.

Geretha Tyese Lewis had been charged with capital murder, but
her plea on Wednesday was to the lesser charge of murder.

She is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 19 and faces between 10 years to life in prison.

Prosecutors say Lewis was 18 in 2007 when she placed her crying
daughter, Zarial, in a plastic bag and stuffed her in a closet, leaving her there for an hour.

When she came back to check on the child, Zarial wasn't
breathing.

Lewis stuffed her body in a garbage bag and placed it outside in a trash bin.

Zarial's body was never discovered.
