HURTSBORO, Ala. (AP) - The mayor of Hurtsboro has been arrested
and charged with tampering with government records after being accused of denying access to public records to a resident of theRussell County community.
Russell County Sheriff Tommy Boswell says the mayor, 73-year-old
Rayford Ernest Tapley, turned himself in at the county jail Wednesday morning.
Russell County Assistant District Attorney Joe Edwards says the complaining resident wanted the minutes to Hurtsboro council meetings, information about money the city took in and how it was spent.
Boswell granted Tapley a recognizance bond, and the mayor released shortly afterward.
