Dothan Police Chief John Powell has resigned on Wednesday and accepted another law enforcement position in Tallahassee, Florida

Back on April 1st, Chief Powell applied to become the Director of the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco.

With more than 100 candidates vying for the job, it's was with mixed emotions that he accepted the offer.

Dothan Police Chief John Powell has been keeping a watchful on the Circle City for the past 4 and half years.

But when a new job prospect popped up, a job he views as a promotion, it was an offer he just couldn't refuse.

"This is an opportunity that doesn’t present itself often," says Powell.

Chief Powell is a Florida native and says making the decision to leave was a family affair.

"It's been a very difficult decision my wife and our kids; we enjoy Dothan tremendously, it's a great community," says Powell.

Some Dothan PD officers say his decision to leave didn't come as a surprise.

“I got to say I kind of saw this coming…he's trying to better his family and plan for the future and I certainly can’t blame him for that,” said Investigator Tim Mullis.

Sergeant Benny Baxley hopes whoever takes over the reigns continues to follow the path paved by Chief Powell.

"I think we're on a good course of progress in the police department and I hope that that continues,” says Sgt. Baxley.

The chief is admittedly fond of the Circle City and particularly its citizens.

“I’m going to miss the personnel here, the people here, tremendously,” says Powell.

The head of the Dothan Police Department hopes to leave behind a simple legacy.

“I hope that I’m remembered as a professional that did the best job he could,”

The new department Chief Powell will head up in Florida oversees almost 350 employees in 13 offices across the state.

His job will be to keep alcohol and tobacco out of the hands of underage people, ensure licensed establishments are following the law, and to collect taxes and fees from those places.

The Dothan Police Department has two more weeks under the direction of Chief Powell.

His first day on the new job is Monday, August 24th.
