Feds grant 4.03 acres of park to Univrsity of Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - The federal government has granted to the University of Alabama a 4.03-acre plot of land listed last year as surplus and eligible to be transferred to a local or state government to be kept as a park.

It covered half of the former River Road Park East that the university did not control.

The school will take control of the property on Aug. 1.

Bill Huie, program manager for Federal Lands to Parks, said it's the first time in the history of the program that land has been transferred to an educational institution.

The program, part of the National Parks Service, helps communities create new parks and recreation areas by transferring surplus federal land to state and local governments.
