Perdido Beach becomes town on Alabama coast

PERDIDO BEACH, Ala. (AP) - There's a new town on the Alabama
coast.

Officials in Baldwin County say Perdido Beach has officially
been incorporated as a city following a vote by residents earlier
this year.

It's not big - the full-time population is only 558 - and Perdido Beach won't have a mayor or council until this fall, when an election is expected.

But the waterfront town can begin levying local taxes, providing
police protection and enacting laws once elected officials are in
place.

And the action means the area can't be annexed by larger
cities like fast-growing Orange Beach.

Perdido Beach is located on the north shore of Perdido Bay.
