B'ham 7th grader wins Library of Congress award

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Highlands School student Cori Mazer won the honor for a letter she wrote to "The Giver" author Lois Lowry.

The letter was part of a class assignment to write a letter to an author whose work had changed her life.

Mazer said the "thought-provoking" book is full of inspired
insights and ideas.

Guy Lamolinara of the Center for the Book in the Library of
Congress presented the award to the 13-year-old at her school
Friday.

As a national winner, Mazer got nominate a library to receive a
$10,000 reading grant from Target Stores. Mazer chose the library
at her own school.
