MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Legislature has passed a bill to require hospitals and other health care facilities to report to the state health department when patients acquire infections while being treated inside the facilities.
The House voted unanimously to give the bill final approval Thursday. It now goes to the governor for review.
Democratic Sen. Bobby Denton of Muscle Shoals proposed the bill after his son, Mike Denton, passed away from an infection following routine knee surgery. The legislation is named in memory of Denton's son.
Denton was visiting in the House when the bill passed Thursday and members gave him a standing ovation.
