MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Groups that have proposed and opposed a
luxury convention hotel at a state park on the Alabama coast are
working on a compromise that would allow construction to begin.
The Alabama Supreme Court last month blocked plans by the Riley
administration to lease beachfront land at Gulf State Park to Auburn University for at least 70 years. Then Auburn would sublease it to the Atlanta-based West Paces Hotel Group to develop a luxury convention hotel.
The proposed compromise is subject to legislative approval. It calls for the hotel operator to be competitively bid rather than hand-picked. And it calls for the convention center to be operated by state employees rather than the private sector.
